Fire Extinguishers

If used properly...
A portable fire extinguisher can save lives and property by putting out a small fire or containing it until the fire department arrives.
It is important to know that fire extinguishers are not designed for use on large or spreading fires.
Even when used on small fires they are effective if you remember the following:
Do you have the correct extinguisher for the fire?.
The operator must know how to use the extinguisher.
The extinguisher must be within easy reach and work
You must have a CLEAR ESCAPE ROUTE from the fire area. Ask these questions before using the extinguisher.
Will this fire extinguisher put out the fire?
Have you alerted others about the fire?
Have you called the Fire Department?
What happens if I can't extinguish the fire?

• Make sure that you store your fire extinguisher near an exit.
• On the way to get your extinguisher dial 911.
• Only then should you attempt to extinguish the fire and always make sure that the exit from your home or office is at your back.
• REMEMBER... fighting fires is for the fire fighting professionals.
• Most people have no idea on how to use an extinguisher, and very few home extinguishers are properly service.
The Crookston Fire Department recommends that everyone have at least one fire extinguisher in their home and in their vehicle.
Fire extinguishers should be inspected monthly to insure that the extinguisher is in good condition and they should be inspected or tested annually by a certified technician.
