Job Opening: Police Department Clerk Typist

The Clerk/Typist’s primary responsibility is for the management of the Police Department’s law enforcement information system including data entry and records management for Police Department case files. The Clerk/Typist is responsible for preparing police reports for distribution to the appropriate prosecuting authority. The Clerk/Typist must be able to deal tactfully with the public, city, public officials and employees in person and by telephone. The Clerk/Typist will be responsible for recording parking violations, maintaining a file of unpaid tickets and issuing warnings and requests for summons regarding unpaid fines. The Clerk/Typist must have a good understanding of the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act and data privacy in general. The Clerk/Typist must be familiar with and able to use a variety of office equipment and programs including audio transcription devices, computers and printers, telephone and fax, and the State of Minnesota Criminal Justice Information System. The Clerk/Typist may be called upon to assist the Administrative Assistant with general office management. The starting probationary salary is $18.85/hr. with the potential to increase to $20.94/hr. after six months.

Minimum Requirements: High school diploma or GED equivalent. Two years progressively responsible experience in computer entry and/or word processing.

Desirable Qualifications: Two years’ experience in police records work. Two years’ experience with data processing criminal justice information systems and retrieval procedures. One year of Vocational/Technical or Business College in secretarial training.
